After a few misfires that delayed the iPad release, Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition finally made it past the guardians of the App Store and is now available for download. Unfortunately, owners of the original iPad are left out in the cold. BG:EE requires iOS 6.0, which isn't supported on the original iPad.
The original iPad only has 256 MB of RAM available for applications as opposed to the 512 MB available on the iPad 2 and 1 GB available for the current generation iPad. This means developers sometimes need to walk a tightrope in order to build a robust app for the iPad 4 and still run on the original iPad. This becomes even more difficult when tasked with porting an existing game to the platform, even a game that's more than a decade old.
But warmer days might be ahead. The team is working on squeezing the game onto the original iPad, so a compatible version of the game might be arriving in the future.
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is priced at $9.99, which is a little hefty for an iPad game. And some of the new content is only available as an in-app purchase. It also takes up a whopping 1.7 GB of space. But for one of the all-time-great RPGs, it's still a pretty good deal.
