The rumormill rarely takes vacation, but it does take off for New Year's Day. After a brief lull, the rumormill kicked off 2013 by suggesting we can expect a full-sized iPad and a new iPad Mini to be released this summer.
According to a report in The China Times, Apple will be running a test with chipmaker TSMC as a possible replacement for Samsung, who currently manufacture the system-on-a-chip processor that powers the iPad. This test run will be followed by a full production cycle that could see a new set of iPads this summer.
But I wouldn't pay too much attention to the rumor. While Apple may want to switch away from Samsung, there's no reason such a switch would involve an earlier release. If Apple does decide to release an iPad earlier than the September-October time frame, it would likely be an iPad Mini equipped with a Retina Display rather than upgrades to both iPad models.
