WarCraft fans rejoice: War is coming to the iPad. No. Not that WarCraft. While publishing World of Warcraft to the iPad might be a great way to boost lagging subscriptions, Blizzard isn't quite ready for that step yet. However, they are ready for a baby step, and in this case, that baby step is Hearthstone: Heroes of WarCraft.
The new game is a collectible card game similar to Magic: The Gathering and will debut on the PC and Mac before being delivered to the iPad. The freemium game is a little bit of a departure for a company known for multi-year development cycles and big name games like World of Warcraft and Diablo III.
The game was produced by a development team within the company codenamed Team Five, a group kept intentionally small and tasked with creating a game considered "non-traditional within Blizzard's walls," according to Chief Creative Officer Rob Pardo. The game allows you to play as one of nine heroes within the WarCraft lore, each representing a different class from World of Warcraft.
It should be interesting to see what Blizzard can bring to collectible card games, which are known for having a deeper level of strategy and tactics that range from deck building to knowing the perfect card to play at the perfect time. Check out the top collectible card games fro the iPad.
