Best Overall

HP OfficeJet 250

HP OfficeJet 250 All-in-One Portable Printer with Wireless & Mobile Printing

Courtesy by Amazon

Pros
  • Excellent photo quality

  • Fast printing and scanning speeds

  • Portable

Cons
  • No USB cable included

Measuring 14.3 x 7.32 x 2.7 inches and weighing just 6.5 pounds, the OfficeJet 250 is lightweight, but it's still on the larger end for a battery-operated printer. However, with sharp looks and the ability to print, scan, and copy, it's a superb all-in-one printer with AirPrint that you can take on the go.

The ten-page automatic document feeder and up to 50 sheets of overall paper capacity allow this printer to push up to 10 pages per minute (ppm) in black and white and up to 7 ppm in color. This number drops slightly to 9 ppm in black and white and 6 ppm in color on battery, but the OfficeJet 250 has an external pack that's good for up to 90 minutes of printing. Regardless, this is much faster than a mobile photo printer like the Kodak Step, which only prints a single page per minute.

The printer includes paper guides you can use to adjust your paper size, and these guides can be a bit tough to move, but overall, the printer has a functional design. The 2.65-inch color touchscreen allows for quick menu selection, with an easy-to-navigate interface with a home button and back button reminiscent of a cell phone screen.

You can also change the printer's settings from the downloadable HP Smart app (Android and iOS) and print, scan, edit, and more from the companion app. The inclusion of AirPrint makes wireless printing super easy for Apple hardware owners. Android and Windows owners can use Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth Smart Technology for wireless printing.

Canon PIXMA iX6820

PIXMA iX6820 Wireless Inkjet Business Printer

Courtesy by Amazon

Pros
  • High-quality photo prints

  • Sturdy design

  • Solid print times

Cons
  • Tri-color cartridge drains quickly

Canon’s PIXMA iX6820 isn’t as high-tech as some other printers on this list, but it performs well and is long-lasting. An inkjet business printer ideal for home and office, it’s ready to handle 4 x 6-inch mailers, 11 x 17-inch spreadsheets, 13 x 19-inch charts, and more. The iX6820 offers exceptional printing detail at 9600 x 2400 maximum color dpi. However, because of this high detail, color cartridges go quickly.

Measuring 23 x 12.3 x 6.3 inches and weighing 17.9 pounds, the iX6820 is small enough to fit almost anywhere indoors but not small enough to fit into a backpack for on-the-go prints. Capable of printing up to 14.5 black ppm and 10.4 color ppm, the iX6820 can tackle a borderless 4 x 6-inch photo in just 36 seconds from start to finish.

For photo printing, the iX6820 combines FINE print head technology and genuine Canon photo paper for borderless photos that can last up to 300 years when stored properly. Additionally, the iX6820 offers a quiet mode for nearly zero noise when printing small quantities of paper. When it comes to wireless printing, AirPrint is ready from day one, and the PIXMA works perfectly with Macs without any additional drivers.

Best For Home Office

HP OfficeJet Pro All-in-One Printer

HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e All-in-One Printer

Best Buy

Pros
  • Fast output in color and black and white

  • Good quality prints

  • Alexa and Google Assistant-compatible

Cons
  • Not portable

If you need a powerhouse that can handle large printing tasks, the DeskJet Pro 9025e might be just what you're looking for. Capable of printing 24ppm, this machine can handle multi-page documents quickly. Plus, with up to 4800x1200 dpi resolution in color, you can print photos in exceptional detail.

It isn't the smallest printer, though, and it's not the type of unit you can sit on the corner of your desk. You'll likely want to give it its stand or table, as it measures 12.53 inches tall, 17.2 inches wide, and 15.6 inches deep, and it weighs almost 26 pounds. It has a high-quality look, with a large LCD screen and a clean grey-and-white aesthetic, but this is the type of printer you'd want specifically in an office, as opposed to in a living room or bedroom where it would likely take over the room.

You get a trial of HP Instant Ink with the printer, which provides ink to your door before your cartridge is empty. This service is helpful because you don't have to worry about running to the store during a busy workday. However, after the trial, you'll have to pay a monthly fee for the subscription, which will vary from $1 per month for 15 pages up to $25 for 700 pages. If you're buying a printer with this capacity, you likely print quite a bit, so you'll want to account for the subscription cost when deciding on this printer.

Best No-Cartridge Printer

Epson EcoTank ET-3850

Epson EcoTank ET-3850 wireless printer.

Amazon

Pros
  • Uses ink tanks instead of cartridges

  • Saves money and reduces waste

  • Good print quality

Cons
  • Expensive up front

The Epson EcoTank ET-3850 differs from many other InkJet printers because it uses refillable ink tanks instead of replaceable ink cartridges. You get ink bottles in the box that let you print for up to two years, but this depends on how frequently you use the printer. Espon says each ink bottle set is equivalent to about 90 ink cartridges.

Ideal for small and home offices, the 3760 can print at up to 4800 x 1200 resolution and up to eight pages per minute in color (15 pages in black and white). This rate is much slower than the HP DeskJet 9025 model but slightly faster than what we typically see from a budget or compact printer like the DeskJet 3755.

The ET-3760 isn't as heavy as some other small office models, weighing only around 16 pounds and measuring 10 inches tall, 16.4 inches wide, and 19.8 inches deep. It has an automatic document feeder but a flatbed lift scanner, which can also impact speed. It's an excellent printer for someone who doesn't want to deal with ink cartridges but still wants high-quality prints. For speed and power, other models on this list may better serve you.

Brother HL-L8360CDW

Brother Business Color Laser Printer

Courtesy by Amazon

Pros
  • Speedy print times

  • Immaculate text and graphic quality

  • Multiple wireless printing options

Cons
  • Mediocre photo quality

This printer might be the one for you if you have a home office or business and need a high-performance printer. Offering wired Ethernet and wireless connectivity via AirPrint, the Brother HL-L8360CDW is a color laser printer with print speeds up to 33ppm. It's not a lightweight machine, though. It measures 17.4 x 19.1 x 12.3 inches and weighs 48.1 pounds, so it's far from portable.

The security lock function lets administrators regulate and restrict access to printer functions for up to 200 users, which offers added security and peace of mind for a business environment. An integrated NFC card reader for releasing print jobs with an NFC-compatible card or badge adds another layer of protection for controlling access to the printer and reducing the cost of wasted prints.

Low-cost printing is a staple of the HL-L8360CDW. Standard black toner cartridges yield 3,000 pages, while the three standard yield color cartridges offer up to 1,800 pages. The 250-sheet and 50-sheet capacity multi-purpose trays are expandable up to 1,300 by adding other trays.

HP DeskJet 3755 Compact Printer

HP DeskJet 3755 Compact All-in-One Printer

Amazon

Pros
  • Affordable

  • Small footprint

  • Solid companion app

Cons
  • Lacks premium print speeds

While the HP DeskJet 3755 doesn't offer the premium speeds or quality of higher-priced units, its value is surprising. Plus, at only around 6 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 7 inches in depth, it occupies a small footprint in your home office. The 3755 also folds into a rectangle when you're not using it so you can tuck it away in a drawer for storage.

Since the DeskJet 3755 is an all-in-one model, it can print, copy, scan, and even fax from the HP Smart app. The document feeder holds up to 60 pages but prints relatively slowly, putting out 8ppm in black and white and 5.5ppm in color. It connects via Wi-Fi and works with Apple AirPrint, so it should work perfectly for the mobile-minded.

What to Look For in an AirPrint Printer

Quality

Before narrowing your options, decide whether you want a laser or inkjet printer. Laser printers are better for documents, but color models can be more expensive. Inkjet printers are optimal if you plan to print pictures on photo paper — ink is cheaper than laser printer toner, but you’ll have to replace it more often.

Look at metrics like DPI to see the printing resolution and how many pages the printer can put out per minute in black and white and in color to see how fast the printer can go.

Size

Size and form factors are also important considerations when considering a new printer. Will the machine sit on a messy desk, or do you have a separate printer stand? Also, will you travel with it? If you need a portable printer, that’s important to remember at the beginning of your search.
