I admit, when I first heard about The Daily, I was skeptical. A $30 million project by media czar Rupert Murdoch, The Daily aimed to bring subscription news to the 21st century in the form of an iPad app with daily updates.
Subscription news? But isn't that so 1990s? How many of us actually subscribe to newspapers these days? And with so many free alternatives on the iPad, what makes The Daily so special?
The Daily Features
- A true digital newspaper delivered daily to your iPad
- Interactive features from HD video to the latest Twitter updates on a particular subject
- Includes games like a daily Crossword and Sudoku puzzle
- Subscription fee of $.99 a week or $39.99 a year
The Daily Review
It didn't take long to find exactly what makes The Daily special.
The Daily manages to bridge that gap between those who miss the days of browsing the morning paper over a fresh cup of coffee, and those who dream of a Star Trek future where newspapers come alive at the touch of our fingers.
As its name implies, The Daily is a newspaper that is downloaded each day to your iPad. With over 100 pages of content, it might surprise you to know that this is original content crafted by a staff of journalists specifically for The Daily, not simply articles copied from other news portals. And along with topics ranging from news to sports to art to apps and games, The Daily is full of gorgeous photographs and HD video. There is even an anchor to introduce you to the top stories of the day.
But it doesn't stop there. Each issue contains crossword and sudoku puzzles that are linked to the iPad's Game Center. You'll also find interactive polls, charts with clickable hot spots that pop up additional information and articles linked to the latest Twitter updates on the subject.
In other words, it contains all of the interactivity you might expect from a 21st century newspaper.
As you might expect with any new app, there are a few hitches. The performance when scrolling through the carousel of article images on the main screen can sometimes be a little choppy, and you may have to wait a few seconds for the picture to load on a page. But for the first version of an app, The Daily is pretty clean, and we can no doubt expect the performance to become better optimized in future updates.
The Daily costs 99 cents for a week's subscription or $39.99 for a yearly subscription, but you don't have to pay anything to check it out. You'll be able to check out The Daily for the first two weeks free of charge.
