Did you know you can control the behavior of the iPad's Side Switch? By default, the switch will mute the iPad, but with volume controls in such easy reach, it can be helpful to modify the side switch to lock the orientation.
Locking the orientation of the iPad is great when you are playing a game or reading a book and the iPad is held at an odd angle. Rather than become increasingly frustrated with the iPad switching between landscape mode and portrait mode, you can simply lock it into one or the other.
First, you will need to go to the iPad's settings. This is the little icon that looks like gears turning.
Next, choose General from the menu on the left side of the screen.
Last, scroll down the general settings until you reach the section labeled "Use Side Switch to:". Your choices are to Lock Rotation or to use the button as a Mute switch.
No matter which one you choose, the opposite will become available in the hidden music controls accessed by swiping from left to right on the iPad's task bar. So, if you choose to use the side switch to mute the iPad, you can still lock the orientation via the hidden controls.
